Involve SM v1/2/3 QS & SQ Test Report

This unit was tested a little while ago, but the report was never published until now. Basically, we were tasked to publish it by a few people elsewhere on the internet, so they are to blame! Involve Surround Master v1/2/3 Test Report

  1. Hi, looks from the test data, it was decoding QS in SQ mode. Unbelievable that such a bad decoder in on the market.

    1. Hi, many thanks for your comment on this unit, althoughI do need to correct you on one point.
The unit was originally designed using an off the shelf audio DSP in an effort to bring another matrix system to the audio market that was based on the work by Sansui [better known as Sansui QS].
They advertised the unit as a good quality QS decoder, which is incorrect, but on QQ where people wanted it to decode SQ as well.
The DSP used is incapable of handling SQ in the way it needs to be dealt with to enable a correct decode. So, what they did was bodged the unit in the same way CBS did back in the day of the 10:40 decoders, without the decoder itself.
This meant that all they did was to reduce the seperation Front L/R and Rear L/R thereby giving the impression of Front/Rear seperation, which ends up giving a fuzzy/messy image, especially in the middle of the square.
I made a promise not to put out any albums that Mike Dutton had released on his wonderful SACD’s, but there is one release that shows this perfectly., the “Airto/Deodato in Concert” album was decoded using this unit.
If anyone is interested to compare it with a correct SQ decode, i will make it available FOR TESTING ONLY.
